The Garden Bed

63

Images

Stephen worked alongside Alison Doxey, his lifelong friend and a professional florist, to produce this artisan garden for Chelsea Flower Show 2016.

Presented as though the observer is indoors, looking out to an accessible hospice garden, the design incorporates homely, familiar planting and a hospice bed enveloped by the natural surroundings.

Invigorating and calming, restorative and contemplative, The Garden Bed illustrates how even the most humble of spaces can be a beautiful sanctuary.

Calm and soothing

Created for Les Bourgs hospice, this oasis of calm incorporates natural materials and the soothing sound of running water to provide a welcome sanctuary for patients and their families.

Stephen had the pleasure of meeting Their Royal Highnesses Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, when they formally opened the gardens in 2012.

Scenic and reflective

Images

This garden’s main feature is a spectacular cascade, with magnificent stone terraces and pools of water encircling the house. Boardwalks, bridges and pathways lead through a kitchen garden and over terraces, to the summerhouse and wildflower meadow below, hugging contours and offering fantastic views of the islands beyond. Founded in organic design principles, this project entwines the buildings into the natural surroundings.

Stephen, along with his friend, architect Andrew Dyke RIBA, was awarded Outstanding Landscape Design for this project at the Guernsey Design Awards 2018.

From smart lawns to undomesticated woodland and a playful treehouse, distinctly different areas unite in this public garden space. Formerly open land, the rooms that have been formed encourage exploration and relaxation in each area, making it worthy of its title, The Peace Garden.

Stepping into this quintessentially English garden feels like going back in time. Gorgeous heavily scented borders line pretty paths punctuated with riots of rose and clematis covered archways. Manicured lawns and thoughtful landscaping show off the beautiful Cedar tree to its greatest advantage, creating the perfect setting to appreciate afternoon tea and the splendour of a traditional English garden.

Timeless and romantic

Images

A one word brief – ‘romantic’ – was the inspiration for this garden. Soft waterfalls, pathways full of chamomile and thyme, sweeping lawns, flower meadows and watercress beds make this an enchanting garden for romantic strolls and daydreams.

Stimulating and sensory

Noise, scent and colour provide lots of essential sensory stimulation in this garden created for residents with additional needs. Painted murals by local artist Mary Kingsnorth, light, water, and woodland provide a full sensory experience and a feeling of freedom.

Neat and tidy

Formerly overgrown and unkempt, this back garden has been transformed into a little haven. With spots to catch the sun at different times of day and drifts of plants displaying colour throughout the year, this design also incorporated the existing Indian bean tree – Catalpa bignonioides. Pretty, cottage garden planting is kept in order with crisp lines and privacy is ensured by pleached hedges.

Wild and natural

13

Images

An abundance of wild orchids, dragonflies flitting over ponds and glorious wildflower meadows evoke nostalgia and delight. This most natural of landscapes melts even the most urban of hearts.

Design and drawing

12

Images

Beautiful, bespoke landscapes don’t happen by chance. Before anyone so much as lifts a spade on site, a great deal of thought goes into the design. The first stage of design is the most vital: going into a space and seeing all the opportunities, constraints, problems and possibilities, and identifying solutions that work for the land and the client. Design integration with other professionals such as architects is crucial for every element of a landscape to perfectly fit together.

Social and spacious

16

Images

The delighted owners of this garden watched it morph from a windswept, exposed site that was difficult to use for outdoor living to a fantastic, versatile space. Clever use of shelter solves the problem of high winds leaving the breathtaking views still intact.

Communal and spiritual

19

Images

John Wesley said, “I look on all the world as my parish” and we hope the community and congregation of The Wesley Memorial Church, Epworth will look on this garden as their own. Demonstrating our exceptional understanding of landscaping, our design incorporates a new statue of Wesley that (unbeknown to us at the design stage) bears a striking resemblance to a sculpture that appears in the original sketch but was never built because of cost.

High and windy

17

Images

If you live on top of a cliff, you’re pretty much guaranteed two things: wonderful views and cutting winds. By working with the architecture to create a space that blends in beautifully with the existing landscape and overcomes the challenges of the site, we’ve created a calm environment sheltered from the elements that still makes the most of those views.

Infrastructure and setting

We’ve created green and pleasant spaces on business and retail parks and in residential areas, working closely with other professionals to produce integrated, seamless environments.

Modern, sleek and angular, this garden incorporates a raised pool and precision lawns. The pleasing symmetry creates an atmosphere of uncluttered stillness and tranquillity, making it the perfect place to relax.

Harmony and beauty

12

Images

As talented and experienced landscape architects, we are able to create a space that harmonises perfectly with the existing buildings, features and period. This garden is younger than it looks, but has been expertly crafted using reclaimed materials and period design to perfectly blend with its surroundings.

Reclamation and regeneration

19

Images

Regeneration projects can give whole communities new life and vigour, making a difference to everyone in the area. For this project – the transformation of the old pit heap at Grimethorpe colliery – we started with an enormous heap of hostile shale. With paths, planting and patience, eventually this area will seamlessly blend with the original landscape, making it a pleasant, peaceful place for the community to enjoy.

Rural and peaceful

11

Images

Landscape architecture is about much more than just planting. This idyllic rural retreat has been created using natural colours and textures in paving and planting, curves, levels and a variety of beautifully complementary materials. The resulting space has a traditional feel with a modern twist.

This landscape, which was nominated for a Best Healthcare building award, provides a safe, calming environment for patients, families and visitors to the hospital. Grasses and movement add calm, and the garden and buildings work together to create a pleasant, soothing space.
